Record application and participant numbers at the BNS expedition project 2016 to Brazil and Peru.

The Brasil Norte-Sul expedition project 2016 (BNS16) currently prepares
B.Sc./M.Sc. students from six European universities (Freiburg,
Eberswalde, Krakow, Dresden, Hamburg, Vienna) for their upcoming trip to
the South American forestry and wood sector.

Political entities (National Forestry authorities, Brasília) as well as
the leading academic institutions (UFPR, UFRRJ, UFSC, UnB, UNAMAD) are
opening their doors to discuss the challenges of forestry and forest
product utilization in the context of global change in the Amazon and
adjacent biomes. The content and programme is to be found here:

The participants form three topic panels to discuss key issues and deliver the learnt concepts to our students at the home institutions.

Panel I: Relationship of the progressive land-use change by
unsustainable agriculture and illegal tropical hardwood logging – the
role of national regulations, law enforcement and the consumer markets

Panel II: National parks, tribal community agroforestry, non-timber
forest products and low impact logging – Different approaches to the
same problem

Panel III: Production of lignocellulosic feedstock in large-scale
plantations - differentiation of the advantages and disadvantages for
population, regions and the country's economy
